What we cover

RTO News reports the business of running a training organisation in Australia. Our reader is the owner and the operations manager: the people deciding what to deliver, who will deliver it, what it costs and whether the numbers work. That means funding and contracts, enrolments and student recruitment, the trainer and assessor workforce, student management systems and the technology stack around them, fees and cash flow, capacity and delivery planning, and the strategy decisions that sit above all of it. Almost every decision we cover eventually meets a rule, so the rule is our beat too: how a standard is read, what evidence will satisfy it, how a finding is worded, and what rectification costs in time and staffing. Where we stop is the classroom door. Once the question becomes what is taught and how it is taught, Education Times has the desk and the readers for it. We stay with our own reader: the one working out what a delivery model costs, whether it can be staffed, and whether it will hold up when it is sampled. Those interests have no say in what we publish, no advance sight of it, and where a story touches one of them we disclose the relationship in the story itself.

How we work

We report from the operating floor. Our stories start with how something is actually run: the roster, the contract schedule, the enrolment funnel, the general ledger, rather than with a media release. We speak to owners, operations and finance managers, trainers and student administration staff, and we grant anonymity where naming someone would cost them work, while telling readers what kind of source is speaking. Numbers are attributed to the published source they came from, and where a figure cannot be verified we leave it out instead of rounding it into a claim. We keep reporting and opinion visibly separate, and we do not sell coverage: advertising and sponsorship, if carried, are labelled and have no influence on what we write or how we write it. We do not publish personal information about students or staff, and commercially sensitive material shared with us in confidence stays that way unless there is a clear public interest in publishing it.

Corrections

A correction on this beat is not finished until it carries the right number. Readers act on what we publish: a subsidy rate goes into a budget, a claim window goes into a calendar, a cost assumption goes into a fee. So when we get one of those wrong, the corrected figure sits in the note itself, in front of the person who has already used the wrong one, rather than at the end of a link they have to follow. The mechanics around that are ordinary, and we hold to them. The fix goes on the item it belongs to, dated, saying plainly what was wrong and what it now says. The same note is listed on our corrections page so the record can be read in one place. Nothing is quietly rewritten, and nothing is taken down to make a mistake disappear. Where an error touches something a provider decides only once in a cycle, a contract deadline or an intake date, the note goes at the top of the item as well as the foot, because the reader arriving late is the one most likely to be caught by it. Anyone can ask us to correct something through the contact page, including a provider, a funder or a supplier we have written about, and we will reply with a decision whether or not we agree with it. Where a figure is genuinely in dispute and each side can point to a source, we say so in the item instead of presenting the tidier number as settled.
